Am back from Portland. Sock dreams not so dreamy, but Powells is magical, mystical place. Would worship there daily if I lived there.
Speaking of, anybody know how I can get a job in Portland?
Feel the need to move especially now that the California Supreme Court has upheld voter-initiated inequality.
Voters shouldn’t be able to take away each others’ rights–that’s why Jefferson wouldn’t sign a constitution without a bill of rights.
Some good news today–was having lunch today and a former student came by to tell me that he enjoyed my class and that he’d read all these books since I’d introduced him to certain writers and essayists.
Well, erm, it’s probably not the happiest of ideas, but you could do what many a person in possession of a graduate degree in English have done… and get a job at Powells. I know, it’s sad and happy at the same time, right? My freshman roommate works there – and she just sold her first novel to Tin House, so that’s something.
I am very unclear about how this happened, but I know it’s not over. The bigots just won this round . . . and at least CA had marriage equality for 5 months, which is more than I can say for any state I’ve ever lived in. (Although back in the 90s, my closest Target was in Iowa. I’m proud to have spent $$ there).
if you moved to portland, i’d come visit you all the time. we could eat toast in breakfast cafes in the company of rail-thin waiters with hipster haircuts, and make chalk art on the sidewalk, and read in powell’s all day long. or work in powell’s all day long. i kind of want to move to seattle to work at eliot bay books in approximately the same style (toast, chalk, etc).
Powell’s IS magical. Every time I go there I’m there for hours.
By the way, I’ve also thought about moving to Portland. It’s a nice city.
